UNSW Professional Development Program (International Students)

UNSW Professional Development Program

  • Could you support an international student to complete a 50 hour workplace experience in your office?
  • Do you have administration tasks or projects they could assist you with under your supervision?
  • Do you have staff who could benefit from supervisory experience?

Supervise an international student and assist in their career development by partnering with UNSW Careers and Employment.

What is the UNSW Professional Development Program for International Students?

The Professional Development Program (International Students) is a career development and workplace experience initiative for UNSW international students facilitated by UNSW Careers and Employment. It started in 2009 and is run twice per year in collaboration with over 60 different units on campus which host students as part of the students’ workplace experience.

The Program consists of two components:

  • A three-day seminar on business communication, customer service skills, employer expectations and the recruitment process
  • A 50 hour on-campus office Workplace Experience Program organised by Careers and Employment hosted by various departments at UNSW
The purpose of the workplace experience is to provide an international student with some Australian workplace experience and a chance to learn some transferable skills in a supportive environment. Staff find it an incredible rewarding experience both personally and professionally.

Who are the students?

Students from any major (undergraduate and postgraduate can apply). All student applications are screened and the most motivated candidates are selected to attend the three day employability seminar program, and interview to participate in a 50 hour workplace experience.

Host supervisors will have the opportunity to interview candidates with Careers and Employment staff on select dates. Alternatively, Careers and Employment can interview and select on your behalf.

What type of tasks can the students do?

Students can be placed in a variety of areas. We will try our best to match potential candidates to interview for your unit based on your submission of a description of tasks and interest areas. Please note however that students in this program don't necessarily have specific technical skills.

The primary purpose of this program is to provide international students with some Australian workplace experience, to allow them to gain a better understanding of Australian workplace culture and communication styles. If you are able to provide a student with an opportunity within your office, and you are willing to support and mentor the student through this experience, then this is the program for you!
